The Beauty of Shonai ― A Discussion with Dr. Yoji Kurobane About the Future of Tsuruoka

Dr. Yoji Kurobane, a doctor, essayist, and local historian, is actively engaged in multiple fields. We had the opportunity to exchange opinions with Dr. Kurobane and local businesses on the role of digital transformation (DX) in regional revitalization and how to approach it, as we consider the future of Tsuruoka in the Shonai region of Yamagata Prefecture.

When talking about Tsuruoka’s renowned confectionery, "Kokyo," one can not overlook the craftsmanship behind it. On a refreshing day in May, with views of Mt. Gassan and Mt. Chokai, we visited Kimuraya’s factory in Tsuruoka City and had the pleasure of hearing insights from President Mr. Yoshino.

Recognizing the importance of digitalization amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, President Mr. Yoshino personally studied programming through online courses. During our conversation, he expressed interest in utilizing QMS TRACE as an intuitive method to convey the craftsmanship and tradition, demonstrating his deep passion for the confectionery.

After the interview, we were guided by President Mr. Yoshino through a factory and factory shop tour. Observing the workers' careful and meticulous craftsmanship, we could truly sense their dedication to preserving tradition and delivering high-quality sweets with heart and passion.

Later, at Dr. Kurobane’s office, we engaged in discussions with President Mr. Sato of Yamagata Sohan and President Mr. Yamato of Tsuruoka Silk Co., Ltd. President Mr.Sato spoke at an event held the day before the meeting, "Let's Talk About the Future of Tsuruoka!", where he particularly focused on gathering insights from local emerging businesses and integrating them into regional activities. Furthermore, President Mr. Yamato explained that Tsuruoka is the only place in Japan where the entire silk production supply chain, from sericulture to textile manufacturing, is intact. With a mission to widely convey the tradition, value, and authenticity of Tsuruoka’s silk industry, he expressed keen interest in QMS TRACE as a means to streamline administration while directly communicating the true essence of their products.

We look forward to our continued collaboration with Tsuruoka and the promising developments ahead.
